How does coaching parents help?

Parenting has got to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. And the most important. No one will influence your child more than you. For the rest of their life their childhood experiences with their primary caregiver will escort them. And yet the challenges abound. Each child is different. Most parents do not "learn" how to be a parent. It's on-the-job-training. And at the same time, children are constantly pushing parents out of their comfort zone, pushing all emotional buttons in various ways. Dedicating time to this hugely significant task in life is one of the most valuable uses of your time. You have tools that need to be discovered. You have more knowledge about your child than probably anyone else. That puts you in a unique position for helping them more than anyone else can. Relationships happen over time. And meaningful relationships take time to build and repair. Spending a small amount of time on parenting will save you hours of frustration and resentment. Give yourself the gift of developing your irreplaceable skills as a parent.

Of course, speaking with children is important and can bring understanding. But words allow a child to use their feeling, emoting right brain. So do your child a favour. Let them use the language that is strongest for them.

What to expect in the first session?

I allow an hour to sit together and your unique situation and the background of the child who we are focusing on. We will discuss the current struggle and what may have led to it.  We will go over how play therapy works, answer any questions you may have, and I will ask you to sign a consent form to start working together. If we meet virtually, I will email you the consent form. And most importantly, hopefully you will emerge with some insights and tools so that you can walk out and already begin to see changes. How wonderful that you are taking actions towards a more positive family life!
